Star Trek stuff

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Toolman lent me his old Star Trek role playing game to look at and draw creative inspiration from.  I always heard that it had quite the in-depth player creation mechanism.  I haven’t really looked at it yet, but I stumbled upon these couple of links and thought they looked pretty cool.

Federation Commander sounds like the lazy man’s version of Star Fleet Battles.

Federation and Empire sounds like a pretty cool epic grand strategy game.

They are both made by Star Fleet Games.

Not quite live box opening: Afrika 2nd Edition

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

This is the 2nd edition of Afrika which is made by The Gamer’s and is part of the SCS series. Field Commander Erwin Rommel is pictured on the cover.

Opening the box we find:

What seems to be the normal red and white dice supplied by MMP.

The normal MMP checklist of the box contents.

Afrika 2 specific rulebook. I’ve read these a couple times over the last couple years since they are available online. I’ll need to read them again before I would play.

Map B.

1 counter sheet. I’m surprised there’s not more counters. From the counter density, you’d think you could play through the campaign in good time.

Map A. The maps stretch from Libya to Cairo. Lot’s of nice informational charts in the Med.

SCS rules version 1.7. I think this is the most recent version but I’ll need to check. I’m guessing they are since this 2nd edition came out after The Mighty Endeavor.

That’s all. I’m getting pretty excited about getting some of the African theater to the table. But don’t fear Shindo, I’m committed to getting into Tunisia first. I’m a little stalled at the moment, as usual. But I’m hoping the Thanksgiving push will alloy me to get the basement cleaned up and have a place to setup. I’m slowly making my way through the OCS rules again, but I think I’m gonna have to just bite the bullet and do the two hour reading marathon that you suggested.

AVL – End of Turn 6

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Kharkov has been fortified, appears tight though battle will surely follow along the river.  Southern Donets River defenses are holding and appear strong, though cracks are forming.  Middle area presents the most interesting positions, somewhat mushy, something will surely happen here.

VPs: German 25 Russian 6

FloydWing’s thoughts:  Love the Manstein chits!  They are proving very valuable, especially when they come out during the last two moves of the turn to allow me to reposition my defenses.   Unless I ever destroy any mechanized Russians, I can’t afford to lose more than one Victory City.

Nephew #4’s thoughts:  First mistake of the turn was putting a wrong command chit in the mix, but it turned out decent.  The next turn will be critical for determining whether I’ll have a chance at Rostov or Kharkov.
