Wings crap

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

I’m a little bit peeved about this.  I could probably count the number of full Wings games I’ve seen on two hands this season, but I think Leino’s potential would’ve been better than a crappy defensemen and draft pick.

This season has just been a blur.  I think three years of long playoff runs capped by the disapointment of last season has taken a toll on me.  I could care less about what happens during the season as long as they make the playoffs.   But even that appears in doubt.  What a bunch of crap.  Hopefully they can limp in and regain the players they are missing  beforehand.

Liverpool’s win keeps Chelsea on top!

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I just got done watching the Liverpool/Manchester United game from Sunday that I recorded.  It was one of the best that I’ve seen.  Fernando Torres is an amazing player.  He showed such power to hold off Rio Ferdinand on the opening goal.  I’d still take Drogba, just wish he wouldn’t go down so easily.  He takes himself out of some scoring chances at times in seeking a foul.

Wednesdays are for whining

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Wednesday was a real good day for the most part.  I was on vacation for one, that’s always a plus.  I grilled, that always makes me happy.  We got an early start and went to the Botanical Gardens.  I’m not a sissy boy but walking around in a peaceful setting is pretty relaxing.  I’m looking forward to going back and sitting for a while reading or having a picnic.  I felt somewhat guilty.  The wifal-unit loves the flowers.  Her gardens at the old house were a site to see.  While she loved looking, I could tell it made her miss hers.  At the current place, we don’t have anything to compare to what she did at the old house.  As far as, beginning it up here, that takes some mula and we need to figure out where the sprinkler system runs before digging up anything.  So for the time being, that’s on hold.

The gardens are right nearby my old stomping grounds, Mind Games.  While over that way, I decided to stop by and take my normal browse.  I had last made a stop soon after we moved last year.  As I pulled into the little mini-shop building’s parking lot, I could tell something was wrong.  As I parked in front, my suspicions were confirmed.  Mind Games is no more.  The sign was gone, nothing but empty shelves pushed here and there were visible inside.  My mind struggled to put it all together.  Wishfulness had me thinking maybe they moved again.  After getting home, an internet search didn’t pull up much.  A link to Google maps made it seem like Mind Games now resided at someone’s residence in a Toledo subdivision.  The streetview didn’t make me agree with that.  I finally came across one tiny link that had someone posting in January that they were closing and having a big sale.  Then came the responses of people saying how that had been their store in the past and how they stopped whenever they were in town.

I guess I should be happy they lasted as long as they did.  I have a lot of good memories about that store.  The first time I ever went there was with my good bud Bill, when they were a much tinier store up farther on Reynolds Road.  In college I went there many an evening with Rich to browse what they had.  That’s where I bought my now silent Advanced Squad Leader rulebook.  They will be missed.

After finding out about that on the internet, I remembered it was the start of the NHL free agent market.  Looking through things, I saw what I had feared.  Hossa was no longer a Wing.  I had figured they wouldn’t be able able to resign him, but I hoped that maybe he had developed just a hint of loyalty to the Winged Wheel.  But nope, he moved on.  Money-wise, he’s not getting that much more than what I heard the Wings were offering, a little over a million a year more.  So that surprises me a little.  What really sucks is he went to the Blackhawks.  A team in our own division.

It was a joy to watch him during the regular season over this past season.  I’ve got no ill feelings toward him.  It will be tough watching him play against the Wings.  All I have to say is that I hope he has as much playoff success as he did for the Wings during the past playoffs.  And that the Wings eliminate the Hawks every season he plays.  :)

Thanks Cheli!

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

This news will make nephew #2 happy.  He’s had a thing against good old Chelios for years now.  It really burned him during last season’s playoffs that Cheli score a goal or two and had a solid run.  But it is time.  And I agree with the poster that he’ll probably end up back in Chicago.

I still remember in 1999 when the Wings picked up him and Wendell Clark at the trade deadline.  I had such a smile on my face.  I thought we’d three-peat for sure.  I can’t remember what happened that derailed us.

Victory!

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Last Saturday was game 5 in the eldest girlywog’s soccer season where I’m also coaching again.  Our record was 1-3.  We were playing the team we played the previous Saturday, which I had to miss because of illness.  We ended up losing that previous game 4-3 in a hard fought battle.

In my two coaching stints, it seems like my teams really rise to the occasion against teams that have annoying players.  This team had one.  She backed it up with her foot in the previous game as she had scored all four of her teams goals.  But my players were irate at the elbowing and tripping going on by her and others that wasn’t getting called.  For all I know, she could be the same player that caused such anger with my players during the last season, the MO is very similiar.

So I pulled out an old Red Wings trick from the late 90’s, the “left wing lock”, or my variation of it.  Basically we allocated one of our midfielders to pay a little more attention to the biggest threat on the other side.  That player, codenamed “The Beetle”, had to make sure they were back on defense and make sure there were no easy passes to the threat.

Things started off well, with us applying enough pressure that one of their defense reached down with a hand to stop the ball.  We score on the subsequent penalty shot, 1-0.  They were able to tie the game near the end of the quarter.  The second quarter saw us put on the pressure and take a 3-1 lead before, once again they scored near the end, 3-2.  It was at this time I was informed that this was exactly how the last game had gone, us controlling play and them scoring late.  I believe they tied it early in the third quarter but we retook the lead and entered the fourth quarter up 4-3.  The fourth was a war.  My team was working hard the whole game but you could see the determination on their faces to beat this team, to beat that girl.

Within the first two minutes, the other team got a penalty shot on us.  I can’t remember exactly why, so most likely it was a legit call.  We had one of our best goalies in, but that girl was taking the shot.  She shanked it wide and our lead still held.  She was quite mad and frustrated for much of the rest of the quarter.  It was back and forth the whole quarter but we just could never get that insurance goal.  Our “beetle” perservered and our defense was excellent(the eldest girlywog has become quite a defender).  The last 2-3 minutes of the quarter was spent in their end of the pitch and we held on to win 4-3, giving the other team their first loss of the season!

I was so proud of the kids.  They wanted to beat that team and they played the tactic I employed to near perfection, the annoying girl was held to one goal.  I guess the coaching lesson in all this is to promote good sportsmanship as the number one thing.  Don’t give the other team an excuse or rallying point to rise make it their mission to unseat you.  I’ve seen it happen twice now.

This Saturday is the final game of the season, and most likely my coaching career.  If the eldest girlywog plays soccer next fall, she’ll be in the next age bracket.  I feel that age bracket needs the type of coaching that will actually be able to teach them real skills and strategy, things I don’t really know.  I really enjoyed this season again.  I was a little bit stressed to start out, but once again we had a great set of kids.  We’ll have a pizza party after the game to celebrate the end of the season.  Hopefully we’ll have an even record again.

As I hoped at the end of last season, I hope we didn’t do anything to dampen any of the kids love of soccer and that they had a good time.

Last minute switch pick

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

I’ve been mulling over this for the past day, in my sickness induced slumber.  Yeah, I’ve been sick for the past 3-4 days.  Had to miss our soccer game today, was bummed.  I have been pretty healthy for the past year though.  Anyway, got sidetracked.

I’m changing my number of games prediction.  I’m going to go out on a limb here and pick Detroit in 5 games.  I’m taking craziness here, I know, but everybody and their brother are going with the 7 game pick.  In my experience, when all the experts are agreeing on something, things turn out very differently.  So all you here is the hype of Crosby and Malkin (and if you tap into the undercurrents, you’ll see how much the NHL wants the Penguins to win so they can crown Crosby the savior), but I’m thinking the Wings are going to shock them even more than last year.

Wings/Pens: Round 2

Friday, May 29th, 2009

So, sitting at 10 for 14 in my picks I have one pick left, the Stanley Cup Final.  But I’ve got a few other things to talk about before I put out my final pick.

Bonus prediction:  Fleury won’t fall on his face entering the rink like he did last year.  I’d have almost felt bad for him, but alas, he’s on the other team.

So we get through these 2 off days of Conference finals, and now we only have 2 days off after a 5 game series!  Advantage – Penguins, Detroit could use more days off to get healed up.

Then we find out, we’re playing in back to back game days to start out.  This has to be just because freakin NBC has to show the first two games and heaven forbid has to air a hockey game during the week.  Bettman needs to grow a few.  Most games are on a network most people can’t get or won’t pay for.  Now scheduling has to be mucked with for a network that could care less.  Advantage – once again to the Penguins.  Less time for the Wings to heal up.  As of right now, the league still hasn’t released the start time of game 2 (because of NBC and the NBA playoffs).  Considering game 1 starts at 8pm, if game 2 starts any earlier, things will just be crazy for the healing and resting side of things.

But all whining aside, I’m not laying the groundwork for excuses if the Wings lose.  Detroit has been dealing with injuries through the entire playoffs.  It’s what happens in hockey.  Sure, there are always the what-if’s, like “two years ago, the Wings would’ve beat Anaheim had they not lost so many defensemen to injury”, but that’s what makes Monday morning quarterbacking the sport it is.

You see, this is Detroit’s series to lose.  I don’t see any huge pieces that have been added to Pittsburgh that make them different than last year.  Hossa now wears red, which raises Detroit’s bar higher.  What Pittsburgh does have this year (which is more scary than star power), is that they’ve been there.  There’s that old tired adage that says something like you have to lose before you can win so that you know what it takes.  It happened to the 1995 Red Wings.  They haven’t wasted their last four trips.  But the Penguins aren’t playing some Eastern Conference pretender who somehow found themselves in the Finals.  The Wings are the hockey equivalent of Henry Ford’s automobile.  They are made up of interchangeable parts that can fill in when one needs repaired or isn’t clicking along properly.  You never know whose stepping up tonight, the front line stars or a fourth line grinder.

Another scary thing is how Crosby and Malkin are firing on all cylinders this post season.  And how Detroit’s defense still can scare the living crap out of me at times.  But Uncle Mike will have a plan of action on whose shutting down each of them.

Probably the biggest threat to a Cup repeat is Fleury.  If he decides to stand on his head and make miraculous save after miraculous save, I’ll worry.  Osgood is playing possessed, but with as many breakdowns as Detroit’s defense has been making, he’s not going to stop everything.  Detroit has a history of running into smokin hot goaltenders, but that’s always been in early rounds and hopefully is in the past for good.

They need to stay out of the box as their penalty kill has been pitiful and we don’t need to give Malkin and Crosby more room to skate.  If they can just keep playing the tight disciplined game they’ve been playing, they should take it.  I’d like to go with them in 6, but I’m leaning to a 7 game Final.

Detroit over Pittsburgh in 7 games.  Remember, I only count the win or lose, not the number of games in my record.  :)

Side note:  My little Red Wing night light that was in our bathroom last year.  If you’ll recall, it burnt out mid-way through last year’s playoffs (I believe in the Dallas series) and I scrambled to get a new bulb for it to end a Wing’s skid.  This year it burnt out before the playoffs started.  I’ve been too lazy (and unable to sweet talk the wifal unit into helping me out) to replace the bulb.  The wifal unit put up a different night light before the playoffs started.  Things have been going so well, that the little guy will just have to wait before he lights up my night again.  The wifal unit about gave me a heart attack last night, when she told me with a straight face that she had replaced the bulb.  I didn’t find it funny!

Just thought you’d all want to know that I’m still somewhat neurotically superstitious.  That along with finding that I can’t wear my Osgood jersey during a game.  :)

The Wizard, Versus, and the wait

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Brian Engblom, one of the hockey commentators on Versus, said before the last Wings game that Chicago needs to get in Osgood’s kitchen, because Ozzie’s got a temper and that could get him off his game.  He said something about the kitchen tonight between periods of the Pens game.

While I would say being in front of a goalie and in his face is usually a good thing for whoever you’re playing, I don’t see this connection to Osgood’s temper.  Ozzie seems like the most even keeled goaltender in the league.  Nothing seems to bother him.  He just goes about his business.  I think Brian may be confused with a Blackhawk connection and is confusing Osgood for past Hawk tender Ed Belfour.  People could skate a foot away from him and he’d start hacking with the stick.

If there’s anything that’s probably starting to raise Ozzie’s temper, it’s the continuing questions from these annoying reporters and broadcasters questioning his validity as a great goaltender.  He’s backstopped the Wings to 2 of their cups and I feel he’s the reason we’re two wins from returning to the Finals.  He plays and unconciously solid game and is very driven and focused come playoff time.  I watched Tuesday’s game with little of my normal edge of seat nervousness.  He just seemed more focused than usual even.  If not for a couple defensive mistakes he would have had a shutout.

Osgood’s playing probably the best I’ve seen him these playoffs, even better than last season.  The Wings have had numerous defensive lapses through these playoffs and Ozzie’s been there.  About every game we get off to a slow start, and Ozzie’s there to keep us in the game.  It’s been pretty exciting so far.

What’s the deal with having 2 off days?  Arena scheduling conflicts?  I’d understand that, but if not, come on.  Now I’m hearing that the first two games of the Finals may be on consecutive days.  Playoff hockey is meant to be played every other day.  Switching back and forth from an east to west coast venue is a little more understandable, but we’ve taken care of those pesky west coasters.
